11 May They Stole a Hairbrush and a Quarter Bar of Soap from the Library!

While looking for evidence of a marriage for a genealogist, I came across this article that caught my attention on the April 3, 1906 front page of The La Porte Argus Bulletin.

“Public libraries throughout the Hoosier state are being systematically robbed. The LaPorte library was forcibly entered during the hours of last night.

The plunder: One hair brush and a quarter of a bar of soap.

It is evident the robbers wanted money for on opening the library this morning the chaotic condition of things evidenced what the invaders wanted…..The books on

the shelves and in the cases were not disturbed…..an entrance was then forced to the museum on the upper floor. Nothing of value was taken here.”

It’s so good to know that our librarian must have been a smart person in order to prevent the robbers from getting any money!

Also, this library building was on Maple Avenue. The current building was not opened until 1920.
